What is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons (also known as D&D) is a fantasy role-playing game where you and your friends assume the role of a party of adventurers. You can play a warrior wielding a battleaxe or a wizard with powerful spells.

"It’s more than a game—it’s a masterclass in probability, math, improv, and social-emotional learning."

It is a communal activity where you, your friends, and the Dungeon Master decide where the story goes. Together, you'll solve puzzles, battle monsters, and create memories that last a lifetime.

"A safe, inclusive environment where every player feels welcomed."

About the Dungeon Master

Rollick Carlberg West has 7 years of experience and a deep love for the game. He believes peer-to-peer connection is vital for kids. Having a "third space" that is neither school nor home is essential for growth.

He provides a safe, inclusive environment where every player, including neurodivergent kids, feels welcomed and heroic. His table is a place where math meets magic, and shy kids become bold leaders.

Frequently Asked Quests (FAQ)

What exactly is D&D?

Think of it as a collaborative campfire story where kids are the main characters. As the Dungeon Master, I describe the world and the monsters, players decide what to do next, and dice decide whether daring plans succeed. It is heavy on imagination, light on screen time, and great for teamwork.

What kind of "loot" do we need to provide?

Honestly, just a surface. A dining table, kitchen island, or outdoor picnic table works great. I bring the hoard: dice, character sheets, maps, and miniatures. No expensive manuals required on your end.

Is D&D appropriate for ages 10-13?

Absolutely. Sessions are age-appropriate, creative, and focused on teamwork and problem-solving. Think PG-rated adventures like The Hobbit or Stranger Things (minus the scary bits).

How many players can join the party?

For the best experience, a party of 5-6 players gives everyone plenty of spotlight time.

Does it have to be a one-time thing?

Not at all. We run one-shot parties and ongoing campaigns, so if kids catch the D&D bug we can continue their story weekly or monthly.

D&D for a birthday party?

It is a memorable, immersive upgrade from typical parties. Everyone gets a chance to shine in the story.

What if my child has never played before?

Perfect. Most players start as "Level 1" in real life. We teach the basics quickly, and kids are usually casting spells and dodging traps within about 20 minutes.

Where do you offer your D&D party experience?

We serve families across Essex & Passaic County, including Montclair, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, Nutley, Verona, Cedar Grove, Clifton, and nearby towns.

Any pro tips for parents?

Having snacks ("healing potions" and "rations") on hand is always a hit. Adventuring is hungry work.

Why is D&D popular again?

Pop culture helped bring it back, especially Stranger Things and Hawkins, Indiana. We wrote a short overview on our blog.
